lg lcd round.jpg When it comes to LCD displays we all tend to think in squares and rectangles because that’s the shape of nearly every HDTV and monitor out there. There are some companies though that want us to think ‘round’.

LG has just unveiled what it claims is the world’s largest 6in elliptical and 1.4in circular-shaped LCDs. OK, you won’t be watching movies on these babies anytime soon but then again that’s not what they are for – at least for now.

The 6in elliptical LCD measures 78.8mm high by 131.4mm wide, while the 1.4in circular LCD measures tot 35.5mm in diameter. Both of them are capable of displaying up to 262,000 colours and have a near-160 degree viewing angle. So, what are they good for?

According to LG, it’s all about creating LCDs for alternative designs and it sees these prototypes being used in a wide range of products, from digital photo frames to instrument panels in cars and consumer electronics. The company says there is also a ready-marketplace for small circular LCDs in mobile phones, gaming devices and watches.

LG will be showing off the new LCDs at the upcoming 2008 Society for Information Display (SID) exhibition in Los Angeles, from May 18 to 23.-Martin Lynch
